Disadvantages of this job


There are very few disadvantages of becoming a police officer but very serious. There is a chance where you can be shot at in a point in your career, your life could be on the line trying to save other lives during a shooting or other life threatening situations, you could be working long and late hours depending on your department, and it is a thankless job, it is your duty to protect people and catch lawbreakers and you often don’t get thank-you’s for doing it.

Advantages of this job


There are many advantages of becoming a police officer. Saving lifes and fighting crime might make you as a person feel good about your self and help you become a better person by doing the right thing. Some benefits of being a police officer are that New recruits who are posted to detachment that is identified as duration location will receive one payment of two thousand dollars to offset travel expenses which is great, Life insurances is based on your salary not age, 6 sick days are paid for and you get an additional 124 days at 75 % pay, officers get a drug card that covers all prescription drugs and you also get dental/vision/hearing full coverage. The benefits of a police officer are amazing you can’t go wrong with it; you get many great and satisfying benefits and advantages.

Personal Characteristics/Abilities Needed for this career


Some important abilities/skills needed for this career would be to have excellent observation and attention skills, police officers everyday have to observe really hard to be successful at their job. Police officers need to know how to work well under pressure because every day there will be new problems and you don’t know what you’re going to face and when. At the beginning of this career you have to be extremely physically fit and you have to maintain that somehow throughout your whole career by doing PT training with other officers once a year. Police officers tend to have excellent memory which is really good when it comes to court trials because you know what happened on the top of your head so you don’t have to refer to your notebook which isn’t a bad thing if you have to anyways.


 

Occupational Outlook

Job opportunities in most local police departments will be favorable for qualified individuals, whereas competition is expected for jobs in  Federal agencies. Employment changes all the time. Employment of police and detectives is expected to grow 10 percent over the 2008–18 decade, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Population growth is the main source of demand for police service.
 
 There was one job opening for this career but there are also many job openings to become a security guard which is a step or two below a police officer if you don’t make it. ( i only found one job advertisment but you could also just apply at anytime to any police force and if they need you they will hire you)

Job description


a) Police officers protect the lives and property of citizens. They maintain order, catch lawbreakers, and help prevent crimes. In small towns they do many duties and in Larger cities the have more of a structured division of responsibility. Police officers may patrol the streets on foot, bikes, in cars, they control traffic, or work as detectives investigating crimes as they explore further in their career. At the police station officers may be assigned to work in the crime laboratory or the records department. All officers file reports of incidents, and always testify at trials and hearings if needed.

b) Police officers serve the Law to protect the community and make sure everything in our cities is under control and not in chaos. If we did not have laws or a service to protect our community and make sure that were safe everything would be total chaos, people would not know what to do. The general duty that a police officer promises is the protection of lives and property through the enforcements of laws and ordinance. A normal routine for a police officer everyday would be something as little as to check the parking meters for violations, routine patrol, preliminary investigation and traffic regulation and as big as dealing with a murder case and many other brutal scenes. Every time a police officer makes an arrest they have to do lots of paper work that comes with the arrest.


 

Educational Requirements


a) To become a police officer is quiet simple you don’t really need a lot of education. You need at least four years of secondary education but if you haven’t completed grade 12 and have completed a two or three year community college program Ontario considers you as having met the educational equivalence.
